Chairman Peter Rees Previews Ebbw Vale Game

Chairman Peter Rees previews Saturday’s home Tier 1 Premiership game v Ebbw Vale

Croeso cynnes iawn i pawb o Clwb Rygbi Glyn Ebwy i Banc Yr Eglwys heddi! It is with great pleasure that we welcome Ebbw Vale RFC to Church Bank for our penultimate game of the 2016/17 season.

I begin with a warning to all supporters, home and away, that when you arrive at Church Bank today you might think that you have made a mistake and are instead at Ascot or at least Ffoslas as, for the first time, as far as I am aware, we have a Ladies Day at the Drovers. Thanks to the hard work of Helen, Sandra and Gina we are expecting over 60 loyal female supporters (some who maybe don’t always make it to the games but are just as loyal and vital to Llandovery RFC!) who will be enjoying an afternoon of fun, rugby (and frolics?). Please give them a warm welcome, treat them with respect and perhaps buy them a few drinks to thank them for their support! Croeso cynnes ferched.

Meanwhile, Ebbw Vale come to Church Bank on the back of two defeats and are currently in fifth place in the Tier 1 league with a two point gap between them and a top four position with a place in the play offs at the end of the season. Meanwhile our regular supporters will probably be resigned to the fact that the Drovers will not feature in the play offs this season following a last minute defeat to Aberavon in our last game.

We have become accustomed to winning over recent years and being towards the top of the league placings. I know our players and coaches are disappointed that we are not there again this year. However, as reported in previous programme contributions, injuries have unfortunately decimated the second half of our season but it was extremely reassuring to see how the team performed against the Wizards and could have sneaked a win. Necessity has meant that the coaches have had to rely on a number of young players over recent games and, whilst it has been tough going, they have shown the character that is expected of a Drover and today the coaches are giving a game start to a young player straight out of U18s rugby and another product of Llandovery College, so perhaps we will have the opportunity to see some of the future players that will be gracing Church Bank over the next few years.

At the same time I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution that a slightly older Bryn Griffiths has made over recent years. Since joining the club in 2012, following a career far and wide, Bryn has become a firm favourite with everyone at Church Bank. Despite his occasional indiscretion Bryn has been a great cornerstone of our pack and has been the scourge of many an opposition team.

We have a full house of games at home today with the Youth entertaining Llangennech and the second XV playing Pantyffynon. Immediately following the first team game the District representatives will be awarding the Scarlets League Trophy to our Second XV in front of the main stand so please don’t leave the ground too quickly in order that we can all applaud their success with perhaps more to come. Well done boys!

Our sponsors today are JCP Solicitors, Touchdown Design & Ceri Davies of Lloyds Bank. All three have now championed the Club over a number of years and we are very grateful for their continued support. We also have two groups of Match Ball Sponsors in Doug Davies, Derek Jones, Dan Jones all in memory of Rusty Jones & The Girls of Alfie’s Angels. Thank you all!

Due to logistical issues and the number of competitions that have yet to be completed, we are splitting our annual club awards ceremony this year so the First team awards will be presented in the clubhouse following our last game of the season (v. Carmarthen Quins) on 6th May. The remaining awards, obviously including the Youth and second XV will be held at a date to be confirmed but following the conclusion of the various cup competitions that both teams are involved in.Please submit your supporters nominations at the bar following today’s game.
