Chairman Peter Rees previews Saturday’s home Premiership game v Carmarthen Quins
Our guests and near neighbours Carmarthen Quins RFC will fully understand that it is with great sadness and much respect that these programme notes are dedicated in memory of a great, quiet gentleman who has dedicated a lifetime of commitment to Llandovery RFC and rugby in West Wales: “Twm” Gareth Jones – ‘Twm Mount’
Twm first played for Llandovery at the start of the 1950s and became known over the next 2 decades as a tough front-row scrummager for the Club. He captained the club for 5 seasons – 1958, 1963, 1965, 1967 and 1971. Further to his playing contribution Twm held a range of responsibilities on the Llandovery RFC Committee/Board of Directors – Treasurer, Secretary , Chairman, and Fixture Secretary for many years including the current season. He is one of the small number admitted as Life Members of Llandovery RFC.
Twm’s contribution also extended far outside Llandovery RFC itself, having served as Chairman and President of Llanelli & District RU, to which he was also admitted as a Life Member. Twm will be greatly missed by everyone at Llandovery and across the rugby fraternity. We send our sincere condolences to Evelyn, Carwyn and Sharon and to other family members. We will of course have a minute’s silence prior to the kick off in Twm’s memory and I am sure many will also take that opportunity to pay respect in memory of “Wil Cwmrhyddan” another loyal supporter who passed away recently.
I am sure Twm will be with us today in spirit as we welcome the Quins for the first time in 2017/18 and for the last game of the “Double Headers” in the West region of the Premiership. As both coaching teams hope to welcome back players who have been involved in other competitions and international training duties we can look forward to a great game prior to the festive season.
Today’s game has the added spice in that it will decide which of the Towy valley teams progress into the season’s full Premiership league in second place with the associated bragging rights! Clearly it is from now on that rugby matters get serious as, while today’s game is really only worth one point over the season whilst next week’s game could be worth 4, but I am sure both teams will want to go forward on the back of a win. The Quins are already on a positive streak with seven consecutive wins and most recently a tough 25-22 victory over West leaders RGC. The Drovers have also been on a winning way since the shock defeat at Neath.
Congratulations to our Youth squad on bouncing back from a heart breaking defeat against a big and abrasive Pontypridd team to take a win against our other neighbours Llandeilo. It was great to see such a large crowd watching the youngsters last Saturday on a wet miserable afternoon but the courage and determination that our young Drovers showed against another big side was enough to keep us all warm. Da iawn bois!
Our sponsors today are Llanwrda Cricket Club and our Match Ball Sponsors are Doug Davies, Dan Jones, Derek Jones and Mickey Gough. Thank you all, we are very grateful for your continued support.
Er Gwaethaf Pawb a Phopeth Ni Yma o Hyd! Ymlaen Y Porthmyn!
