Chairman Peter Rees previews today’s home Premiership game v Swansea
Croeso cynnes iawn i pawb o Clwb Rygbi Abertawe yn ol i Banc Yr Eglwys heddi!
Today’s fixture with Swansea follows the Drovers’ first Premiership League defeat of the season (20-19 at Aberavon) and Swansea arrive having experienced mixed fortunes over the season but surely growing in confidence following a draw against a strong RGC team last week. Local supporters always look forward to our fixtures with the “All Whites” as there are long playing links between the two clubs and both teams like to play an open flowing game when possible.
Let’s hope the weather conditions favour such an approach this weekend and the officials play their part as well. As a former referee I recognise that all too often we focus too much attention on the decisions of the guy in the middle but sadly due to the complexity of the laws and the game itself the referee can (inadvertently) influence both the style and result of a game. I know they don’t set out to do so but it is all too evident that they do. Whilst the best referees seem to be able to apply the same laws with greater affinity for the game they still need the players and coaches to play their part in adopting a positive approach to some key areas like the scrum and tackle areas. The current structure enables coaches to talk much more directly with the WRU referees’ department so let’s hope they (coaches and referees) are all in listening mode and the referee becomes a less visible but still vital component of the game!
Whether it was the closeness of the result or the general pressures of life but we noted with some concern that our former coach and current Aberavon supremo Lyndon Lewis was hospitalised on Sunday following a heart attack (or three!!); what is more remarkable is that he found another former Drover, Pete (the Meat) Edwards in the adjoining bed following a similar scenario. News is that both are recovering well and we, of course, send them our very best wishes.
Whilst our first XV slipped to their narrow defeat at Aberavon our second XV bounced back from their cup defeat of a fortnight ago to take a win in their first WRU Conference game of the season against Bridgend Athletic 24-35. This week they travel away to Crymych, another side we have had close playing links with over recent years, and the Youth XV are even further south and west at Fishguard in the Cup. Good luck to both teams and our grateful thanks to their coaches and management for their hard work!
Our Match Ball Sponsors today is Mrs Anne Williams who needs little introduction to our local supporters but for the benefit of our Swansea visitors are of course Aled Williams’s (Llandovery, Swansea & Wales) mum! Thank you for your continued support. I hope you have a great afternoon.
As usual our pitches look immaculate so a big thanks to Roger and, as this is his last weekend in charge of the Caravan Park, a thank you to Dai Manchester for his contribution over the last ten years or so!
Finally we hope to see our Website Manager and Director Bryan Weaver at Church Bank today after a long illness, if you do make it Bryan well done and thank you again for keeping the Drovers’ on line profile so comprehensive at all times!
Er Gwaethaf Pawb a Phopeth Ni Yma o Hyd! Ymlaen Y Porthmyn!

The Drovers completed the double over much improved Swansea with this narrow and far from comfortable win.
