Chairman Peter Rees previews Saturday’s home Premiership game v RGC 1404

Croeso cynnes iawn i pawb o Clwb Rygbi Gogledd Cymru i Banc Yr Eglwys heddi! It is with pleasure that we welcome RGC to Church Bank for their second visit of the season. We hope that their travelling supporters will join us after the game to watch, and of course support, Wales in their first six nations match against Scotland. Let’s hope that Wyn “Clynmawr” will make another impressive impact in the last quarter of the game.

Whilst our welcome to our visitors today is entirely genuine I must return to a theme from last week’s programme - the inconsistent adherence to the “A Licence” agreement between the Premiership clubs and the WRU. In our cup game against Llanelli both teams were equally affected by the release of players to the region and I am pleased to acknowledge that the Scarlets were fair in ensuring that both teams contributed equally to their regional team. Unfortunately it is likely (and I hope I am proven wrong) that our fixture with RGC might be unfairly influenced, not by the Region, but rather by our opponents not releasing players.

We have confirmation from the Scarlets that they requested players from RGC and the WRU have confirmed that they (RGC) are required to release the players as part of their A Licence agreement and yet the RGC squad for this fixture contains those same players! To make matters worse it is likely that the Drovers will be asked, and will agree, to release more players to fill the gaps created by the absence of RGC players! It is our policy to give our players every opportunity to play at the highest level, to support the region, and, to conform to the letter and the spirit of the A Licence. The WRU will decide whether there has been any contravention of the agreements that underpin the Premiership and whether there should be any sanctions taken. The Quins will also be watching this space as it is reasonable to suggest that, had they not conformed to the A Licence last week, they would have had a stronger team against Pontypool and how might that have affected their result?

On a more positive note a great favourite with our supporters, one Bryn Griffiths, will this weekend play his 150th fixture for the Drovers. Well done Bryn and a heartfelt thanks from us all. One keen analyst of the game claims that Bryn’s recruitment to the Church Bank team was a key element in making the Drovers truly competitive and also enabling us to develop younger players in the pack. I for one agree with him.

I also mentioned last week that your Board of Directors are reviewing all aspects of the Club and as a result we are in the process of establishing a group that we are describing as "Friends of Llandovery RFC" to advise, support and assist the Club (and the Board in particular) in developing its short and medium term plans for the future. If you think you would like to help please speak to one of the Directors.

Our Match Sponsor is the Cottage Inn, Llandeilo and I know our travelling sponsors would like me to thank Brian for his generosity to them whenever they call in on their way back from an away game. Our match ball has been sponsored by another regular supporter of the Club – Tom Pollack – Thank you both!

Er Gwaethaf Pawb a Phopeth Ni Yma o Hyd! Ymlaen Y Porthmyn!
