The History of Llandovery RFC

In order to simplify the reading of the Club’s historical records, and to enable additional material to be easily added, our History is structured into a number of separate pages.

These pages are described below, and the list will be amended as material is added.

To access the individual pages, use the links on this page labelled as Related Pages.

Currently the pages available are:

Records related to matches through the years

Team information, and match reports, have been uploaded back to the start of the 1990s – some are still being worked on so you’ll see gaps all over the place. Sometimes I’ve not been able to find out the full match team so the team listing consists just of players whose names appear in the report or the scoring section!

Match pictures have been uploaded back to the 2007/8 season, and uploading of pictures from 2006/7 is currently underway.

I would like to put on record my gratitude to the club members who have been, and are still, helping with the task of building up our present-day, and history, sections.

Reports on 1st XV games are invariably provided by Huw S Thomas, and Ian Williams of Riley Sports Photography provides pictures of some games. Gareth Salt has taken on the role of match stats supremo and ensures that we have an accurate record of who does what and when. Handel Davies always pens a preview for all home match programmes which we also use on the website.

Huw George writes up the 2nd XV reports for us, and Eifion Jones the Youth reports.

Without these regular weekly contributors it would be very difficult to keep our supporters abreast of “what’s occurring”.

Looking back across the seasons, Huw S and Huw George both figure very regularly as authors within our reports going back through the 1990s and 2000s, as does Handel.

To see match records, including pictures related to a given match, use the On The Field menu tab, then use the drop-down menu to select the correct season and fixture.

As well as being assigned to the Fixture, each image is also assigned to the player(s) who appear in it. To see all the images referenced to a given player, use the Team menu tab, then select that player from the Past Players option.

A lot of the match pictures are courtesy of Ian Williams, of Riley Sports Photography. (You can visit Ian’s website to see pictures from many clubs, by clicking on his logo on our front page, where you can also buy copies of his pictures).

Request to club members and friends for access to archive materials

In terms of accumulating materials for uploading to the site – the late George Adams gave me access to his collection of Membership/Fixture cards, and the series since 1950/51 was completed with the help of Roland Griffiths and Jeff Rees. Roland, Handel and John Kendrick have all given me past programmes from which to glean information and Huw S has enabled me to photocopy even more.

When time permits I’ve got a lot of past pictures contributed by Ian Williams, by Richard Firstbrook and by John Brand to be uploaded and assigned to the relevant matches.

It would be much appreciated if club members and friends would make available any historical records which would help build up a fuller history.

In particular, the loan of programmes and other sources of player and match information from previous years would be very helpful.

Any items loaned will be carefully looked after and safely returned to the owner.

Please email Bryan Weaver if you have any items which can be borrowed.
