Chairman Peter Rees previews the Aberavon game

Croeso cynnes iawn i bawb o Glwb Rygbi Aberafon i Fanc Yr Eglwys heddiw! It is with great pleasure that we welcome Aberavon RFC to Church Bank for our last game of the 2019 season.
As another season comes to a close we are naturally inclined to look back and whilst in many respects it has been a fantastic term again for the Drovers with not only supporters claiming that they have witnessed some of the best rugby ever played at the Church Bank but the detailed record shows that we have consistently had a top 4 record for defence as well as home and away results. In all honesty though despite clearly avoiding the big relegation battle the 18/19 season will almost certainly be remembered as perhaps what might have been and had it not been for a few games that went against the odds we would still be battling it out with the big money boys of Merthyr, Cardiff and Pontypridd for the league title! I am sure however I reflect all our supporters in congratulating and thanking the players and particularly the coaching team for the way they have approached each and every game. Unfortunately looking towards next year we still cannot give you any forward details of next season as the WRU have yet to announce the 19/20 structure. What we do know is that the Premiership clubs have agreed to participate in a cross border competition with the Scottish Super Six clubs but this will only include the top six clubs in the Premiership and we will only take part if the WRU agree to cover our costs fully. Watch this space!
Meanwhile the 18/19 season very much continues for our 2nd and Youth XVs as they appear in Parc Y Scarlets on consecutive days on 18th and 19th May. On the Saturday the seconds face Carmarthen Druids in the Llanelli and District Castell Howell Plate final whilst on the Sunday the Youth team have a local derby against Llandeilo in the East Carmarthenshire Final. I am sure both teams would really appreciate your support.
Congratulations go to Tomi Lewis, Morgan Jones and Iestyn Rees on their selection for the Wales team in the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina next month and more locally congratulations to the four players that have all progressed through the Drovers development ladder and took part in the WRU finals in the Principality Stadium a couple of weeks ago. Along with the success and determination shown by our current second xv this is further evidence surely that given the opportunity we could certainly sustain a second XV that would compete in the national leagues!
Our match sponsors are Adeilad Cladding whilst our match ball sponsors are Gary Watkins Construction plus regular travelling supporters Justin Davies, David Cook & Jock Campbell – Thank You all!
Finally please don’t forget that we will be hosting our first XV awards presentation in the Clubhouse immediately following today’s game so please come along.
Er Gwaethaf Pawb a Phopeth Ni Yma o Hyd! Ymlaen Y Porthmyn!
