1) TWO WINNERS OF THE FIRST/LAST TRY COMPETITION
The last round of the competition – Llandovery v Aberavon – saw two winners. The first try from Jack Maynard (10) earned Eirian Davies £50 and the second from Harri Doel (15) got £50 for David Boorer.
Eirian Davies generously donated his £50 to Latch, the charity that supports the children and their families of those being treated by the Oncology Unit at the Children’s Hospital of Wales, whose catchment area stretches from Chepstow in the South to Aberystwyth in the North
2) END OF SEASON 23 CLUB GALA DINNER
The all inclusive 23 Club black tie dinner on Friday May 10, 2019 proved a great success.
A Six Nations Menu, designed for the evening by John and Jackie Cook, was followed by a Question and Answer session with the club coaches and a 23 Club Quiz.
The choice of Cock A Leekie with Irish Soda Bread, Welsh Sirloin of beef with boulangère potatoes, Amaretto and Chocolate Torte with Cornish clotted cream followed by coffee and Scottish shortbread reflected the international tone of the menu.
Excellent red and white wines from Chile were also freely available throughout the evening.
In a highly informative and entertaining Q and A, the three club coaches – Euros Evans, Simon Davies and Gareth Potter who were guests at the dinner alongside respective wives Emma, Karen and Clare – adroitly handled a range of questions from the 23 Club audience.
Questions on the future of the Premiership, the standard of refereeing, policy on Drover recruitment, reflections on the past season and other areas of rugby interest were answered honestly and clearly.
After a warm round of applause from the 40 strong audience, the 23 Club presented the trio with hand-made local pottery as an appreciation of their efforts on and off the pitch throughout the season.
To cap a good night for the coaching trio, their table won the rugby and general knowledge prize quiz but only after an objection by Dai Thomas for electronic misuse had been dismissed by Quiz Master Huw S Thomas after a lengthy stewards enquiry.
