DROVERS THROUGH TO QUARTER FINAL PLAY OFFS BUT WHO WILL THEY BE PLAYING?

Huw S Thomas guides us through how the Super Rygbi Cymru play-offs will work and what awaits Llandovery and Carmarthen Quins.

Llandovery’s win over league leaders Cardiff has ensured a top-four finish and a home draw in the quarter-final play offs on May 3

But they will not know their opponents until the conclusion of the season’s regular fixtures

Depending on a multitude of results elsewhere, the Drovers could end up second (unlikely), third (possibly) or fourth (most likely) .

On Sunday, Newport caused a huge surprise in routing second placed Ebbw Vale 40-14 and leap frog the Drovers into third place.

If the table stays as it is, fourth placed Llandovery will entertain Pontypool on May 3 but if Newport and Ebbw Vale falter in their remaining games, the picture could change.

Ebbw Vale have two games to play – away at Aberavon and home to Swansea – whilst Newport’s remaining game is away at Carmarthen Quins.

The results of these games as well as the outcome of tomorrow’s Bridgend – Llandovery game will determine final placings.

If Llandovery finish fourth, they will definitely be home to fifth placed Pontypool in the quarter finals.

If Llandovery finish third , they will  face the club that finishes sixth in the table which could be anyone from Aberavon, Quins or Bridgend but most likely Aberavon who have two games left to play.

If Llandovery finish second, they will face the club that wins the “wild card” play off on April 26 between eighth and ninth, currently Bridgend and RGC.

If the the Quins-, 32-24 winners over Bridgend , beat Newport on Saturday, they could, at a push, finish sixth and an outside meeting with  Llandovery at Church Bank in the quarter finals.

More realistically, Aberavon who have two games to play will finish in sixth and so push the Quins into the “wild card” qualifiers alongside Bridgend,  RGC and Swansea.

If the Carmarthen side were to finish 7th or 8th, they would have a home draw at the “wild card” stage
