MUST WIN GAME FOR THE DROVERS

If the Drovers want to have a chance of retaining the WRU Cup then they must beat RGC up in Colwyn Bay this Saturday writes Huw S Thomas

The North Walians lead Pool A of the newly named SRC Cup after two wins out of two, the first against Aberavon 54-42, the last a stunning 34-31 against Cardiff at the Arms Park and with home advantage over Llandovery, they  look in a strong position.

RGC are one of only two sides to have beaten the Drovers in the SRC league – the other Ebbw Vale.

Back in September RGC pipped Llandovery 28-23 and although the Drovers gained revenge 31-23 in December, the games were extremely tight affairs with home advantage the crucial factor.

Aberavon, Bridgend and Cardiff have all suffered defeats so Saturday’s game is between the only two unbeaten sides in the five strong Pool A.

The Drovers enjoyed a narrow 40-33 win over Cardiff after trailing 33-12 at one stage and cannot afford to give early advantage to an RGC outfit who always play far better when at home.

The North Walians who languish in seventh place in the league will be prioritising winning the Cup that they last won in 2017 with a 15-11 win over Pontypridd.

If the Drovers can sneak a win in Colwyn Bay, they will be in a strong position with a home game against Bridgend and an away game at Aberavon left to play in Pool A.

The winners of Pool A will play the winners of Pool B in the final on March 20.
